Program Overview

Supervisory Leadership Series (SLS) covers the major skills needed to lead and manage a work group and provides supervisors and team leaders with the opportunities to practice leadership skills in a safe learning environment.

This 19-module program uses contemporary learning approaches like interactive presentations, discovery learning, personal application, skill practice, and individual action planning, giving participants the ability the to apply the concepts on the job. Modules can be combined in any combination or sequence, however, Working Styles precedes all but two modules: Meeting Leadership Challenges and Creating an Empowering Environment.

Meeting Leadership Challenges

Understand the challenges and rewards of managing people successfully. Plan for developing the skills and confidence to lead in today's business environment.

Creating an Empowering Environment

Create a more supportive work environment and apply supportive leadership practices. Develop strategies and plans to support others in work units or teams.

Working Styles: Working with People Effectively

Identify ways to adapt your style to achieve the greatest results. Learn and understand people's styles and practice versatility skills for more effective interactions.

Managing Conflict

Manage conflict for enhanced productivity and teamwork. Learn skills and tools for managing and resolving conflicts in the work group.

Communicating Effectively

Use two-way communication skills and behaviors to engage employees in meeting work-unit goals. Learn and practice tools for good communication.

Making Valued Contributions Utilize the unique talents, skills, expertise, perspective, experience, and style each person brings to the work experience. Enrich the solutions created by the work unit or team.

Building High-Performance Teams

Use one-to-group skills to create more effective teams. Learn team characteristics, participative leadership, and shared responsibility to build high-performing teams.

Developing a Collaborative Mindset

Facilitate team members to fully contribute their value. Understand the effect of different mindsets on team or work-unit performance. Learn skills to reach innovative solutions through collaboration with diverse team members.

Motivating for Results

Identify and resolve motivational problems. Apply skills and tools to put the Leadership/ Motivation Model into practice and lead in a way that influences employee motivation.

Setting Performance Goals

Use written, measurable goals to focus employee energy and provide the basis for performance management. Learn and practice a process for conducting a goal-setting session with a direct report or team member.

Interviewing for Selection

Learn and practice a six-step process for conducting selection interviews. Understand that a good selection requires two-way communication.

Taking Smart Risks

Develop employees into successful risk takers who make sound decisions. Apply a process for successful risk taking that identifies risk opportunities and which actions to pursue. Use the Risk Analysis Cycle to evaluate the losses and benefits of a risk action, and learn a Risk Protection Strategy to ensure the success of risks.

Delegating and Directing

Identify how, when, and what to delegate. Understand opportunities for increasing and enhancing delegation and direction on the job.

Managing Time Wisely

Use self-management and time-management techniques to accomplish high-priority tasks.

Coaching to Performance

Increase employee performance through effective feedback skills. Learn and practice coaching skills for improving job performance and commitment.

Reviewing Performance

Learn and practice a process for conducting effective performance reviews. Understand the factors of a good review including communicating expectations and observations and integrating the sessions into the employee's development plan.

Assessing Training Needs

Maximize the effects of training for each employee. Learn the key steps to supporting training – needs assessment, preparation before training, implementation, and follow-up support and coaching.

Team Decision Making

Learn a systematic, structured approach to decision making that ensures that the right people are involved and nothing important is overlooked.

Problem Solving

Learn a proven process and acquire a set of tools for analyzing and solving problems in the work environment. Learn the steps to effective problem solving and identifying potential barriers.
